Fatboy Slim
Probably the most well-known figure we have is Fatboy Slim, a constant presence at major events in the city, particularly when the local football team celebrates a promotion. He’s famous for hosting legendary parties on Brighton beach, although those were cut short when the council stepped in.
One of the most memorable events was in 2002, when around 250,000 people flocked to the beach, transforming it into a wild sea of revelers enjoying the sunshine and perhaps indulging a bit too much! Fatboy Slim’s connection to Brighton and its community continues to thrive, as he remains a beloved icon of the city’s music scene.
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
David Gilmour, the legendary guitarist of Pink Floyd, resides in Brighton with his wife, Polly Samson. The couple has constructed an impressive mansion in Hove along the seafront, which was completed in 2020 to replace a 19th-century bathhouse. Located near Hove Lawns, the property boasts a private garden, balconies, a gym, and even a sauna. Among its luxurious features are a humidity and temperature-controlled wine store, an orangery, and a charming courtyard garden.
This custom-built residence was designed by the award-winning architect Keb Gavarito-Bruhn, who incorporated elements from the original building, including the distinctive Dutch gables. Local residents were thrilled to see the transformation of the site from a neglected space into a stunning home.
Chris Eubank
Chris Eubank, the affable boxing icon, is a familiar sight along the seafront, often seen driving his distinctive truck while beeping and flashing a smile at passersby. He owns an impressive mansion filled with boxing memorabilia that reflects his storied career.
Eubank has called Brighton home for most of his life, having originally come from South London and spent some time in New York. His larger-than-life personality and unique style have endeared him to locals. If you’re in the area, don’t forget to keep an eye out for his equally famous son, who is also making a name for himself in the boxing world.
Matt King (Super Hans)
Matt King, born on 31 January 1968, is an English actor, DJ, and comedian currently calling Brighton home. He’s widely recognised for his memorable role as Super Hans in the iconic British sitcom Peep Show, where he brought to life the eccentric and unforgettable character that has become a fan favourite.
A passionate supporter of Tottenham Hotspur—just like his on-screen persona—Matt’s journey in the entertainment industry has been quite diverse. Originally hailing from Watford, Hertfordshire, he moved to Australia at the age of 20, where he initially worked as a chef. It was there that he crossed paths with comedian Jimeoin McKeown, who encouraged him to explore stand-up comedy. Matt embraced this advice and spent 15 years honing his craft in the Australian comedy scene before returning to the UK.
In addition to Peep Show, Matt has portrayed a range of characters, including Elton John and Terry Venables in the BAFTA-nominated series Star Stories. He also created and starred in his own sketch show, Dogface. His role as Super Hans extended beyond the sitcom, as he has even performed DJ sets in character, showcasing his unique blend of talent.
Zoella
Zoella, another prominent influencer, has made a significant impact in the online world as a fashion and beauty vlogger. She stands out not only for her style but also for her candid discussions about mental health, making her a relatable figure to many.
As of now, she boasts over 12 million subscribers on YouTube, where she shares insights into her life, beauty tips, and personal experiences. Their relationship adds an extra layer of interest for followers, who enjoy witnessing their journey as a couple.
Zoe Ball
Well, here you have it: the power couple of Brighton, well, they were! A significant figure from my childhood, Zoe Ball is not only a beloved radio personality on the BBC but also a household name. She was in a long-term relationship with Norman Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, for 18 years before they split in 2016.
Despite their separation, the two maintain a close friendship, often seen supporting one another in their respective careers. They share children and live in close proximity, so if you’re wandering around the area, you might just catch a glimpse of them both enjoying their lives as co-parents and community figures. Zoe’s influence on British entertainment is undeniable, and her presence in Brighton adds a special charm to the city.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett, the Oscar-winning actress, is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars. Despite her immense success, she hasn’t yet swapped her stunning five-bedroom home in Lewes Crescent for the bright lights of LA.
Her social media posts showcasing her residence have sparked quite a bit of envy among fans, especially with features like a luxurious marble bathtub that had to be hoisted through the window because of its impressive size. Cate’s ability to balance her high-profile career with life in this charming corner of Sussex reflects her love for the area and its welcoming community. It’s clear that, even in the world of fame and fortune, she appreciates the comforts of home.
