While I have travelled around a fair amount, my base has been Brighton for the past 8 years, while my addiction to the gym has slowly grown. Looking for the perfect gym in Brighton isn’t easy and you have to take several factors into account, so I will try my best to outline all the significant points about all the gyms available to you.
The main considerations for me have been cost, classes included, quantity of equipment, time spent waiting for free machines, weight the dumbbells & barbells can go up to and the general atmosphere. My favourite has been Fitness First, while I have considered signing up to LA fitness just to make the most of the swimming pool. Of course, as it gets a bit warmer I might just jump in the sea instead!
Fitness First
Fitness First is the gym I go to, my absolute favourite in Brighton, with friendly staff and great equipment. There is a much greater amount of weights for anyone looking to pack on some size or push themselves harder, while you all of the classes are included in your monthly payment. The only negative I can think of is that it doesn’t have a swimming pool.
The spin class is great and worth giving a try if you are looking to get cut for the summer, while they also have regular body pump sessions.
- The dumbbells go up to 50kg
- Four Olympic barbells
- Two squat decks
- 1 smith machine

LA Fitness
This gym gives me mixed feelings. It has a swimming pool and is a decent size, with classes included. On the other hand, the weights area is terrible, with everyone sharing the minimal amount of equipment provided. This clearly isn’t the one if you are looking to bodybuild, however if you are simply looking to get into shape or lose some weight then this is the gym for you.
The gym is a very quick walk from the station, while they will happily offer you a trial if you want to try before you buy.

The Gym Group
There are two gyms in Brighton by the Gym Group, you have the one based along the sea front, just off the pier, while you also have the new one which is based on London Road. The Gym is amazing if you are looking for a bargain, its a no frills option, with no contract in place (amazing) and no pool. There are plenty of machines, but the reason why I hate The Gym is that they seem to let everyone in, including every student within 15 miles, meaning you share each machine with about twenty other people.
When I enter the gym, I normally have about an hour to hit out my workout, before I have to head home and get stuff done, so the idea of waiting 30 minutes to squat (a realistic time when I used to go there) leaves me thinking its worth paying the extra for a gym where you can jump straight onto the equipment. Plus the personnel it attracts aren’t any where near as friendly as the visitors to Fitness First.
The true appeal to this gym is that you can get nationwide access for cheaper than normal membership at any other gym! Not bad if you travel around quite a bit.

Here is why everyone loves it….It’s 24/7!! I’m incredibly jealous, when I get the energy for a workout on Sunday afternoon, but know my gym has already shut.
Cheetah’s Gym
Cheetah’s is the gym for true bodybuilders. The average attendee are bouncers and security members, who can generally lift a pretty damn impressive weight. Expect 90% of them to be on roids, nothing wrong with that, but it’s an important consideration based on what type of gym you are after, one to push you to the extreme or one to lose a bit off the belly.
